July 10, 2006 , UFC 61, Bitter Busts...
Well UFC 61 has to go down in the books as one of the biggest disappointments ever. I had to watch the fights late because I was in Boston with Joe Rogans. Joe Rogan didn't miss a thing by skipping out on this UFC for a comedy tour. Dave Matthews put on what the fan sites are saying his best show ever while the UFC 61 was a total bomb.
All the highlights came from the lower bouts. Whether or not the Ken Shamrock/Tito Ortiz stoppage was the correct call or not, the fight was still a disappointment. Ken Shamrock was definitely in a bad position when the fight was stopped, but I still wanted to see if he could get out of it. He was able to in Shamrock vs Ortiz the first go around.
The title match was even more disappointing. Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia barely traded any punches in what amounted to basically a lame boxing match. If Arlovski wanted a chance, I thought he should have worked Sylvia's leg a little more which must have been really smarting in the morning. He also could have gone to the shoot near the end. This was a title match and Arlovski's career was on the line. In a fight that was pretty much evenly matched, Arlovski could have won with a late fifth round take down.
Bottom line, this UFC didn't come anywhere near matching the hype.
