August 27, 2006 , 2006 Florida Governor's Race Breakdown, Part I.

This breakdown is actually a lot more interesting than the Senate Election in Florida.  With Florida's Senate race basically now a three way race between Nelson-Harris-Grosholz, the Florida Governor's Race is wide open making it more exciting.  This will be a two part series. I'm only going to concentrate on the two main parties because there are so many candidates.  Let's jump right in.

There's no incumbent to start with this year, so with a coin flip I decided to check out the Democrat's offering first.  Unless otherwise noted, the Republicans are Pro-Life and the Democrats are Pro-choice.

The Front Runner Dems:

  • Jim Davis (D) - The central issue on his site right now is Hurricane Insurance.  Excellent place to start for us Floridians who are struggling with higher rates and blue tarps from last year.  He's a former lawyer who has served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1989-1996 and in his last term was the House Majority Leader.  He supports a balanced budget, opposes offshore drilling of Florida, and wants to create a tax credit for businesses that provide employees with training.  He also supports small business tax cuts and Broward County is one of the largest small business counties in the country.  I'm a big fan of the Balanced Budget and I like his ideas on Child Health care.
  • Rod Smith (D) - Currently Jim Davis's closest competition in the Democratic primary.  Florida has a $2.02 billion dollar non-recurring surplus sitting in our coffers.  Rod proposes to basically dump a lot of that money into our current Public Education system.  He also favors quadrupling the money that goes to protect the Everglades.  He has plans for Home-owner's Insurance and Hurricanes preparedness.  On his site he has a section for supporters called the "Rod Squad" basically ensuring I will not be voting for him in the Democratic Primary.  He supports the Death Penalty and sticks his neck out much more than the other politicians on his issues page.

The Front Runner Repubs:

  • Charlie Crist (R) - I've heard a few of my Democrat friends talk about this guy, but to be sure he's definitely a Republican.  I like his stance on Abortion.  He's quoted as saying, "I'd rather change people's hearts than change the law."  His primary opponent has used this to run attack ads on him, but I believe it's a justifiable position.  On Education he is a strong supporter of parent choice in education, including stringent testing and vouchers.  He also supports the rights of municipalities to limit the sale of pornography and birth control in their city limits.  He opposes expanded gambling and has an interesting take on Property Tax.  If you want to move to another house in the same county, you'll remain at your original tax level.  Supports the Death Penalty and the Right to Die.  I think he took a gander at my [http://www.grosholz.com]Senate site using only his name for his domain and big use of the American Flag.
  • Tom Gallagher (R) - Currently Charlie Crist's closest competition in the Republican primary.  Gallagher is very progressive for a conservative on Environmental issues.  He supports Energy Independence and has a plan to get us off oil while promoting Florida's Agricultural industry.  He also opposes offshore drilling.  His site over simplifies the issues more than any other candidate and I couldn't find these positions on there.  What you will find is his opposition to civil unions and vague positions on everything else.  Like Crist, he has a picture of him and Jeb Bush (Which is it Jeb?).  Interesting side note, I believe that he is much more Pro-Life than Crist but I couldn't find him outright saying he wants to completely outlaw it.  He does support the recent South Dakota law which made it illegal for most types of Abortions.

Other Democrats:

  • Glenn Burkett (D) - His main issue is "Natural Health-care."  He also has a store where you can buy all kinds of "Natural Drugs."  Interesting, he may be the first spam candidate.  He is also Pro-Life.
  • Carol Castagnero (D) - She basically wants to remove the FCAT.  What I did notice though is that she actually has a personal e-mail address on her site (carol@grandmacarol.org) which is better than some of the lesser known Senate Candidates (fraziersenate06@yahoo.com).
  • John Crotty (D) - Supports lowering the sales tax to 5% and cutting out hidden loopholes on tax free spending to pay for it.  Has a 10 point platform with extensive text without really saying anything.  An interesting quote regarding Traffic Safety, "This year the Florida legislature enacted a law which increased the fine for running a red light. However, the dangers associated with red light running are so severe that Monroe Lee, a 51 year old with a vision for the future of Florida...and an old Driver's license photo from 1972....I propose that the fine be further increased, that the points assessed against the driver’s license not be subject to removal by taking a driver’s education course, and that upon a second red light running conviction within a five year period, the driver’s license be suspended for a minimum of 90 days and up to 6 months depending on the driver’s overall record."
  • Roger Alan Hoover (D) - Couldn't find a site for him.  He's an executive, and based on that he thinks he has what it takes to run the state.  "You might say politics will be the 'second act' of my life."
  • Phillip J. Kennedy (D) - No site for Kennedy either.  I found him as a supervisor of Elections.  He's also listed in a few places as a "Perennial candidate."
  • Monroe Lee (D) - If you've gotten this far, click the link.  It's worth it.  "I feel I am qualified for this office, me being born and raised in Florida and I am 51 years old. I have worked for the system for 45 years from picking cotton for 3¢ per pound in 1963 to work for the U.S. Dept. of Commerce (NOAA) NGS to architectural, engineering, built Interstate 10 & 75 (multi-billion dollar projects)."  Status: Did Not Qualify

Other Republicans:

  • Austin Brooks (R) - He is officially listed as a candidate, but I didn't think it could be any harder to find information on these people until this guy.  This is the last person I'll post that I can't at least find something on.
  • Bernie DeCastro (R) - Ex-felon who was granted a full-pardon by Lawton Chiles in 1994.  He spends his time working in the faith-based community and founded a criminal justice ministry.
  • Michael W. St. Jean (R) - The "Gov-Runner."  Has a comprehensive plan called "The Dignity of Human Life Initiative."  I invite you all to click that link, very interesting reading.  Also has a most excellent home page.
  • Vernon Palmer (R) - The telephone number the Division of Elections had for Palmer was disconnected, according to a recorded message.
