January 26, 2007 , Sean Salmon and UFC Fight Night Live...

Last night was a scary night for Sean and the UFC.  I made several posts as information was being collected and have decided to combine them all together into one from newest to oldest:

January 26, 2007, Definite word that Sean is okay...

UFCJunkie.com has confirmed the report:

Good news, everybody.

We spoke to the family, and Sean is okay. He’s been checked over by doctors and will be released tonight.

Thanks for keeping him in your prayers and thinking good thoughts. I’m sure his family and friends appreciate. We’ll talk to Sean as soon as he’s up for it and will have a further update here on UFCjunkie.com tomorrow.

Thanks everyone.

January 26, 2007, Early Reports are that Sean is okay...

Dave Meltzer just reported with this update:

“UFC officials reported after tonight’s Ultimate Fight Night show in Hollywood, FL, that Sean Salmon was okay.

Salmon suffered a devastating knockout from a kick to the head by Rashad Evans in the main event of the show.

It was a scary looking situation, as Salmon didn’t move for approximately seven minutes in the ring, nor as he was carried out on a stretcher. They went off the air without acknowledging the extent of the knockout. Evans, in his post-match interview, only indicated being uncomfortable that Salmon was down and not moving. They never shot near where Salmon was, so the television viewers would not have known the seriousness of the situation.

He was rushed to a local hospital where it was reported that he was conscious and talking, and seemed to be fine.”

January 26, 2007, Final Sean Salmon Update For the Night...

NBC Sports is reporting that:  "UFC President Dana White said at the post-fight news conference that Salmon would be fine, but was being taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons."
January 25, 2007, Sean Salmon Update...

UFCJunkie.com and friend of Sean Salmon has just given this update:

Good news.  My thoughts and prayers are with Sean and his family.  Again I will post any updates as soon as I receive them.

***UPDATE — 11:05 p.m.: Folks, Sean’s family is at the hospital with him now right now. It’d be a really good idea to send some prayers his way. We couldn’t get any specific news about any possible injuries, but he’s going to need some good thoughts headed his way. I’ll let you know once I hear anything more. The best thing we can do right now is to stay patient and think positive thoughts. -UFCjunkie

January 25, 2007, *** Breaking UFC News ***

not good...I just got back from the fight and the status of Sean Salmon is still in question.  Rashad Evans landed a great kick and Salmon instantly went limp.  Evans then landed two more punches after Salmon was obviously unconscious.  I stayed at the fight until he was carried out of the octagon and off site.  His body was limp with no movement and he was hooked to an oxygen mask.

As soon as I find out more I will post.  Feeling among the crowd was that his status was definitely not good.

ED Note to comment: No one has died or been seriously injured in the UFC.  Like any physical sport this might happen.  My thoughts and prayers are with Sean and his family.

Maybe this will draw attention to the fact that this is a brutal, savage sport fit for barbarians. This goes to show what an ultraviolent society we have become as we are calloused to the fact that we pay money to see two men beat the living crap out of each other. How noble. -

Just so you all know, there has only EVER been one know death in the litteraly thousands of pro MMA fights. It was an un-sanctioned event in Europe in which an American fighter with medical issues fought AGAINST Doctors orders. If you want to see a brutal sport watch boxing, there is no 3 knock down rule or standing 8 count, and I have never seen nor herd of a "punch drunk" MMA fighter. Comments like the one above just prove how people like to spout off about things they obviously know nothing about. - James Cameron

TLM I was watching this on TV and I could definitely tell there was a problem with Sean specifically because they wouldn't show him again after the knockout. I hope Sean is ok, but on to the assesment of the fight already! I think that Rashad looked pretty good throughout the fight and I really like how his training is finally starting to come together and earn him some knockout wins. I think if he keeps this up he will really start to be a force to contend with. - Thrash Mongo

I agree with James. Boxing is much more brutal than MMA by far. Boxers take extensive blows to the head much longer than they should be. When was the last time you saw an interview of an MMA fighter that seemed mildly retarded? How about boxing? The reason why it is so much safer is because they stop fights as soon as a fighter is not able to defend himself intelligently. Brain damage comes from being knocked into a stupor several times before the brain can naturally heal itself. How many deaths have there been in boxing, I'm sure there is more than one? -

The only reason why there's no "punch drunk" MMA fighters (yet) is that the sport hasn't been around long enough. Becoming "punch drunk" is something that accumulates over time. Also, to say that boxing is more brutal than a typical 'UFC' or 'Pride' fight, just shows you have NO ACTUAL EXPERIENCE with either type. Both are "brutal", with the nod definitely going to most MMA fights. -

If it's so brutal then why watch? There are many more horrible things in this world that need your attention. Get on it. - Common Sense

Many people watch BECAUSE OF the brutality, while most true fans watch IN SPITE of it. Sometimes the best fights are the most "boring" to the ignorant spectator, who really doesn't know (or may not care) whats happening in the ring. They just want to see blood. Allowing things like knee kicks to the head while on the ground, or elbow slashes to the face are completely asinine, and caters to the less intelligent in the crowd. -

Lets be honest here... most of these guys aren't the brightest in the world. I mean, even people like Hoice Gracey (sp?) have to be a few cyls short of a V8 to even consider getting in the ring. I mean... the only part on your body... ok... the only OTHER part on your body that makes life worth living, and you're asking people to punch it? I would seriously doubt if the crowd are the ones who's intelligence needs to be questioned. Sure is fun to watch though! - Todd

I think there must of been dieing in this sport. In boxing there has been deaths. So why not there not be deaths in the UFC. So are you really sure that there hasn't been any deaths in the UFC. Also i was wondering why boxing is worse then MMA, boxing you can only punch and MMA, WELL YOU MOST OF ANYTHING I GUESS. - Lola

I agree with common sense, that is so right I mean aren't we looking for peace in the world like how they say "WE ARE SISTERS AND BROTHERS UNDER GOD." DOESN'T THAT RING A BELL. - ?ME?

I'm 100% sure there has never been a death in the UFC. - TLM

"Also, to say that boxing is more brutal than a typical 'UFC' or 'Pride' fight, just shows you have NO ACTUAL EXPERIENCE with either type. Both are "brutal", with the nod definitely going to most MMA fights." Having been in both boxing and MMA fights I would disagree because in my experience at least you get hit in the head far more often in boxing. There have also been numerous deaths in boxing the most famous one being Duk Koo Kim in 1982, a Korean boxer who died after 15 rounds of pure beating that was never stopped because he wasn't knocked out. (side note: the bout referee committed suicide shortly after the fight) -

There have been no deaths EVER in the UFC although it has only been in existence for around 15 years. There have been numerous deaths in boxing however it has been around far longer. -

I love the brutality and I am in it for the blood! I am not sure why these guys subject themselves to these beatings. I guess for the money and notoriety. But honestly, MMA is a blood sport and that's why people watch it. I find it a lot more exciting than boxing because you see more knock outs and more action. It is a hell of a lot of fun to see a couple of guys kick the s*** out of each other. No apologies!! - creenay

UFC is a bit brutal but not in a bad way. If it were truly brutal in a bad way.....people would be not waking up from the bouts. But you know what? There are rules. The ref stops the fight if one fighter is in danger. Sometimes the fight is stopped too early but at least people are not getting hurt bad. Yes people are getting black eyes, a concussion, some blood drawn.....but that comes with the territory of any martial art worth anything. The key is that these injuries are minimized because of rules and good refs! - Mark- Dallas, Texas

What it all come down to is FREEDOM! IF, two men are willing to step into a ring and risk death, THEY are FREELY making that decision! Just like a guy who goes snowboarding on mountain tops (which seems a hell of a lot riskier and crazier to me!). Just like soldiers who willingly sign up to go FIGHT for whatever they've been brainwashed to believe in! It's all about Choice and Freedom! This is America the last time I checked. - Boris - Brooklyn, NY

Boxing is more harsh then UFC. Anyone that says UFC is more brutal is retarded. IT LOOKS more brutal because blows are exchanged fast and one man gets knocked out. Yes that is bad. But boxing can go 12 rounds with both guys throwing 600 punches and landing 300, sometimes more. Sometimes a little less, but always atleast over 200. The punches are just the same. See UFC doesn't go 12 rounds so they pace themselves different and can be more explosive. But a 1 punch knockout in round one is a hell of a lot easier to deal with the next day then 12 rounds of non-stop beating with nearly 400 shots landing..lol - Fan of Boxing/UFC

Ufc Rocks there has been a death in basketball, hockey and soccer are they regarded as brutal? This is a great sport and if u think it is so brutal then DONT WATCH! - putikraps

people are idiots..he fights for a living, he was expecting a knockout at some point im sure. And boxing is worse cuz its a lot lot lot more repedative shots over a longer period of time. But the common person would not understand the complexity of the science - the man

To anyone with moral or safety concerns regarding mixed martial arts, I would highly recommend Donald F Water, Jr.'s article, 'Mixed Martial Arts: Ultimate Sport, or Ultimately Illegal?'  Of particular relevance is section III: 'A Defence of Mixed Martial Arts.'  Go to: www.grapplearts.com/Mixed-Martial-Arts-3.htm.

The argument about MMA fights being popular is flawed. If you held a public hanging thousands would (and did in the miiddle ages) come to see it. MMA is a brutal duscusting sport and someone will certainly die soon. In addition to death, how many fighters are brain-injured forever.? Even the concept of "hitting a man while he is down" discusts me. It is only a matter of time until this x-rated sport gets banned. The sooner the better. Ron Steelman.

- Ron Steelman

It is common knowledge that "you don't hit a man after he is down." Only this stupid sport seems to ignore this fundamental principle. Dumb Sport!! Stupid blood thirsty spectators. We are better than this.....Dr. M

- Dr. M

Looks like the PETA people found our site.  If you actually watched the sport you'd realize that while it is two men fighting, there is a skill set being used.  That skill set might be different on the ground than standing up.  There's a ton of strategy involved.

It sounds to me you just don't like fighting period.  Which is okay, don't watch it.  I don't know any fighters that were brain injured forever.  I bet there are many more boxers with those issues than from MMA.

- TLM

To say Boxing has a more negative effect on the brain than MMA is absolute idiocy.  Repititions in hit's withstood isn't a determining factor in the damage the brain takes in.   Some people aren't affected immediately but ALL fighters (mma & boxing) are going to reap what they sow in regards to the hits they take.  "Boxing is worse, MMA is worse"... they are both TERRIBLE on the brain but very addictive to watch.  I love traditional boxing and have only recently gotten into MMA.  There is NO difference in the risk involved although I do agree that it is lame that hitting while down on the ground is beastly and should be looked at for a rule change.  This fight in question Evans vs Salmon is a perfect example why hitting while on the ground should be banned.  Salmon was knocked clean out, and didn't even make an attempt to break his fall, just fell straight down.  Evans proceeded to pound him 1 1/2 times MORE before the impotent ref blew the wistle.  Unbelievable.  And it happens everytime there is a knock-out it seems.  Do you know what happens when Traditional boxers hit while the opponent is knocked down? .. Disqualification.. and thats for a reason.  The fighting is brutal enough (Both mma & boxing) so hitting on the ground is not necessary.  Although the mechanics of MMA kind of in a weird way requires hitting while on the ground there should be a well defined line of when enough is enough.  This fight like many other MMA fights proves how immature this sport really is.  Hopefully they fix it as it has some mighty potential.  Man oh man are the roman empire and modern day America societies drawing some parallels. - Mike

PS A LOT OF the MMA fighters speak with impetiments and "sound retarded" just look at Jens pulver for example.  there are many others.
